Update on PS3 v.2.00, aka Are PS3 Owners Whiny Bitches or Right?Posted 5:30pm Wed Nov 07, 2007 by Shiva Stella Tags: PlayStation 3, sony, firmware update

While admittedly the PlayStation 3 v.2.00 firmware udpate isn't the most encouraging (fans have been weeping and cursing like children on the blog forums since I posted on the story this morning), the ability to implement themes and mess around with a few of the other changes is better than nothing.

Granted there is no "in-game xmb access" (ie, the ability to adjust your friend list and send messages to friends [or chat] while playing a game) and the fans are still waiting on a feature that enables them to listen to their own soundtracks while playing (something with really bad music, I assume), but here's hoping that we're getting there.

If you're curious, GamesRadar has posted a video of the adjusted XMB (the menu system) so gamers can get an early look at some of the fixes. You can view it at the jump. You can also hit the link below to take a peek at the fan response to the firmware update; I am typing in full sarcastic mode when I say that the majority of these people make me proud to be a gamer. Yet they might have a point about the console's features paling in comparison to the 360's - considering the cost of each.

Check it out: it's a theme.

In my opinion there are 3 major things they need to address with firmware at the moment. The lack of ingame function is the largest. The second is that your demos/downloaded content are immovable so you're forced to wade through 20 demos to get to a game that you bought off PSN last month. Finally they need to streamline the PSN store, possibly just using the XMB menu system and further subdeviding it for demos/games/trailers/extras, then sub categories for those. It would be far easier to nagivate than the searchless webpage that they use now.
The themes sound neat, let's just hope they don't go the way of MS and charge for something as simple as additional themes. The ability to make your own themes would be welcome as well. In relation to commenters, well, some places just have really bad communities, sadly.
